English Lessons

North Birmingham for Ukraine offers free English Language courses to Ukrainian Nationals

English classes free for Ukrainian Nationals

NorthBirmingham4Ukraine (NB4U) has provided English classes on Monday mornings since May of 2022 with an aim to teach and improve the English of Ukrainian arrivals in North Birmingham. Our group has grown from one small group to three groups of differing ability as our students arrive and progress. We cater for students from very beginners to conversational level. We draw on the experience of 5 qualified teachers, 3 of whom are qualified ESOL teachers.

We also aim to provide a secure learning environment with a focus on making learning fun and appropriate to everyday life in the UK. As yet, we do not aim to provide examinations, rather, we feed students into recognized college courses as they become available, but we are open to further development if funding allows. We also have a Ukrainian guest, who is a qualified English teacher. He supports our beginner’s group and speaks Ukrainian and Russian in addition to English and Spanish. Additionally, we have a British national on our team who speaks Russian and has visited Ukraine many times since the 1980s; he is, therefor, uniquely placed to help our learners.

  • We offer a friendly learning environment with free refreshments
  • Our sessions are attended by the Refugee and Migrant Centre should you wish to consult them
  • Our NB4U Consultants, Roger, Melanie and Bev are also available to consult during our sessions.
  • If you would like to join us you are welcome to contact Roger directly at esol@nb4u.co.uk

We look forward to welcoming you to our group and wish you every success in your learning. Unfortunately we are no longer able to offer childcare during our lessons.

Conversation Club

Our Friday morning conversation club, with free coffees and teas, accommodates beginners and more advanced speakers. These sessions are less focused on writing or grammar than the Monday lessons, allowing the learners an opportunity to develop their speaking skills and to learn new vocabulary. There is currently at least one native English speaker for every three learners, including three qualified teachers. Building on these sessions we also have outings to local places of interest.

Contact us for further information or to sign up to one of our courses.
