Universal Credit and Benefits Advice

‘Helping our guests move on, we really struggled working out what benefits they were entitled to so that the guests could appropriately set expectations for rental properties’ A Host

Understanding what help you can receive can be very confusing.  The following advice is based on our experience and that of hosts.

Your first step should be to register with the job centre in Erdington. You will be assigned to a ‘work coach’ who will advise you and who can also book you onto employment sessions, such as writing a C.V. and intensive ESOL courses.  You should also speak to your case worker from Refugee Action.

If you still feel unsure about the payment system, there are other ways to get detailed advice and help.

Our Place is a community hub in Sutton Coldfield that offers detailed advice on financial assistance available to you along with personal development and well-being. This centre has been recommended to us by a host.  You will need to book an appointment with them.

Another source of assistance is the charity Turn2us, which has an online benefits calculator.

Our Place and the charity Turn2us have been recommended by hosts in North Birmingham, but if you’re still unsure or need advice then contact us and we will endeavour to help.
